Pepper is One Year Old!

M shared this photo of her Shichon, Pepper, today on the Silver Paw Kennels Facebook page. I wanted to share it here to show people how Shichons often fade as they get older, unless they were black & white to begin with.

Here is Pepper as a one year old dog, and the insert is what he looked like as a young puppy! I think he is gorgeous now, but he sure did lighten up!

Sophie Goes Home

Sophie, our 4th Accelerated Puppy went home last Sunday. She is adjusting well and learning the ropes in her new home. Here are a couple of updates.

Sophie Made It

Well we didn’t hear a peep out of Sophie during the whole 8 hour trip back to P. We stopped about 4 times to get out and walk a bit and she did great. Right now she is resting next to me in the kitchen after getting a walk around the neighborhood and then given a tour of her new home. I am so glad you trained her to walk on the leash properly – what a joy to have her stop when I stop and to wait when I ask her too.

And…

Sophie is doing much better with the grandchildren today. They came over for a visit and she followed them around and hung around while the kids played but jumped back if they make any quick movements. She startles easily even with me with so I don’t know if that will be a longterm thing or if she is still getting used to us. I’m going to take her to a small dog “play group” at a local dog training center and see how she does. Tomorrow we are off to the vet.

It does take some time for a young dog to make the transition. But overall, it sounds like Sophie is getting used to her new home!

Abby – Available Accelerated Cavachon Puppy

20111011-125109.jpg

Abby is Tiny Tim’s partner in crime!  Her personality is very similar to his, outgoing, mischevious, playful, and very energetic!  When Tim was out, so was Abby, but both stayed close to home and greeted us with tail wags and kisses when we pulled into the driveway!

She is just a little bitty thing as well, around 7-8 lbs, and would be a great pup for someone who travels frequently.

Her ears aren’t quite as long as Maddie’s, but they are still sweet and silky.

Maddie – Available Accelerated Cavachon

20111011-121718.jpg

If I had to use just one word to describe this girl, it would be “gentle”, but the word “sweet” would be a very close second.  This puppy is probably going to be the ultimate lap dog for someone.  She is content to be in your arms, and while the other puppies are playing their hearts out, she’d rather watch, or be close to you.

She is 100% puppy still, and does enter into the fun, but she is not the main initiator of it, and sometimes she just stays out of the way when Tiny Tim and Abby (next blog post) get into the rough and tumble play.

20111011-121734.jpg

She is gentle and loving, and a tiny little thing at just over 7 lbs last time she was weighed.

She got one of those killer haircuts as well.  There is a picture at the end of what she looked like “before”.

Her ears and long and wispy, just giving her such a soft and loving look when you see her face!

If you like hair, just let hers grow out!  She’ll be a mop before you know it!

Maddie loves her walks on the leash and does pretty well traveling in the car.  She is crate trained and is just waiting for her forever home.

Maddie will be spayed before going home.

Tiny Tim – Available Accelerated Cavachon

Tiny Tim has reached several milestones and he is ready for his new home.

20111011-111625.jpg

This boy is incredibly inquisitive, willing to explore, and he’s smart.  He’s figured out how to get out of the x-pen several times, and we’ve come home to find him just sitting on the front porch waiting for us.  He is very friendly, playful, and full of energy!

20111011-111647.jpg

His name is “Tiny Tim” because he is tiny, at just 5 lbs, 2 oz the last time he was weighed.  He would be perfect for traveling under the seat of an airplane due to his small size.

20111011-111716.jpg

I”m sorry this isn’t a better photo, but as we were taking a potty break, this gal passed us by, pushing another gal (my guess is that she had Downs Syndrome) in this wheelchair.  They stopped and wanted to see Tiny Tim.  I picked him up and the gal in the wheelchair could speak and pet him.  Tiny Tim was not phased at all by her movements and it just struck me that he would probably be a great candidate for a therapy dog.  I wish I would have gotten a picture of Tim with the gal, but it all happened so fast, and before I knew it, they were heading on their way.

We recently did go to the groomer as his coat was matted and dirty from living in the country.  If you prefer a longer coat, here is what he looked like before his haircut!

20111011-111757.jpg

This boy is ready to be someone’s right hand man!  He loves to take walks, can ride in the car without getting sick (most of the time), and will let us know when he needs out of his crate.  He has already been neutered as well.

He was born in February, so he is 8 months old.  Please contact us if you are interested in Tiny Tim.

Supervise, Supervise, Supervise – Your Puppy

I have 4 puppies in the house right now. This morning, one of them barked somewhere between 5am and 6am, so I got up because walking downstairs when I’m terribly sleepy and grumpy is less painful than cleaning up a puppy that has smeared himself in pee or poop inside the crate. It was still pitch black outside when I shuffled downstairs and began the morning routine with the puppies.

I let them all out of their crates and 2 of the ShihTzus ran right over to the UGODOG and promptly peed. Another had already peed & pooped inside the kennel (thankfully it was the one with a towel in the kennel…but probably having the towel was the reason it went ahead and peed & pooped because there was something to absorb the mess, and somehow puppies know this), so he didn’t go on the UGO because he had already gone. And the 4th puppy began to pee on the floor, but I “Hey’d” him (like Cesar Milan) and quickly picked him up and placed him on the UGO. Of course, by that time, he was distracted and forgot all about needing to pee.

I cleaned up the tinkles on the floor then sat down to watch them all like a hawk so there were no more accidents. A couple did go poop, and they all began to play, eat some food, and check each other out after the long night of being crated separately. After a few minutes I began to look around in my tiny space and see if there was anything else I could do that would make me feel like I was actually accomplishing something. I saw some white towels in the washer, so I moved them into the dryer. Then I noticed that my son was not on the couch where he had been just a few minutes before, sleeping, so I quickly stepped over the baby gate, walked a few feet, and peeked into my kids’ bedroom. He was there. I guess he wanted to sleep without listening to puppy noise and seeing a light that was on.

I was gone LESS THAN A MINUTE, to check on my kids, and when I came back, 3 of the puppies had pooped. Oh my goodness!! Two poops were on UGO, so I was actually happy about that, because at least 2 of the puppies made that choice on their own without my coaxing. Those 2 puppies had chosen the right spot to poop. But one poop was off to the side…oh well. I quickly cleaned it all up so they wouldn’t accidentally step in each other’s poop, but I was marveling at how quickly they all did their business, and when I wasn’t looking. I thought they had already gotten all their pees and poops out while I was sitting there watching them like a hawk. I guess not. And the moment they were unsupervised, was the moment they decided to use the toilet. It happened SO FAST and it seems those sneaky little buggers waited till I was gone on purpose.

The thing is, had I been gone for a full 5 minutes, I could have come back to an absolute disaster area of poop stuck on feet, tracked all over the puppy zone, and an hour-long project of giving puppy baths and mopping the bathroom would have been necessary. It would have been so easy to be distracted for just 5 minutes, but it takes much less than that for a potential disaster to occur.

The point of this story is to tell you that puppies need to be supervised at all times when they are out of their crate! It’s so easy to get distracted with something, but believe me, the minute you leave…that will be their cue to get into trouble! I cannot stress how important it is to supervise your puppy, all day long. Compartmentalize his time into chunks of playtime, crate time, potty time, eating time, walking time, etc. Set your timer if you need a reminder when it’s time to take puppy out to potty. Preventing accidents is always a lot easier than cleaning them up after the fact!

The puppies are back in their crates with bully sticks. My timer will ring in 15 minutes and it will be time to start the process all over again! And so goes my day!

“I would never pee on your floor.”
