Communication

We are extremely busy here and waist deep in puppies. Our first priority is the daily care of our dogs which can be quite time consuming when we have several litters (which is what we are dealing with right now).

I’d like to ask that you use email to ask questions and discuss the puppy selection process, especially if you aren’t yet on the waiting list. I’ve mentioned this before, but with all the different social media outlets it’s nearly impossible for me to keep up with and even see every question that is posted on FB, Instagram, and the blog. I will respond via email because I am able to keep it organized there and I generally don’t miss communication there (though I have been known to have an email get buried before I was able to answer it).

Please be patient as there are 29 people on the current waiting list with around 5 more in the mail. Many have questions, want videos or photos, and want detailed descriptions of puppy personalities. This all takes time.

If you are on the waiting list and we have been communicating via FB, that is ok. Sometimes I will transition someone to FB when we are actively communicating about their puppy selection.

For those just getting started, I need all communication to be via email. You can reach me at:

Waiting List Update

Dear Waiting List Members,

Today, I sent an email to every person on my waiting list. Based on what I already knew, and on the information that people sent back to me, this is the current waiting list.

I have noted color/size/gender preference for those that I know. If you would like to add or change any of the info I have with your name, please let me know. If you have specified colors and genders I will generally skip over your name when I am matching puppies that don’t meet your criteria.

We currently have 23 puppies on the ground and we are not done yet. It always seems to go like this where we have a lot and then nothing. I have lots of helping hands so every puppy is getting daily attention and handling.

We are currently matching Kenzie puppies. The black/white male from the Kenzie litter has been selected, so we have the girls still available. There is interest in the blenheim girl, but there are a few names I haven’t heard from yet and want to be sure I don’t skip over anyone. If you are one of those people, I want to hear from you via email.

If your name has (pending) next to it, it means you’ve said you’re sending a deposit, but we haven’t received it yet.

I will be showing the Pearlie litter later today. They are just 1 week old. Abbey also had her puppies this past week so I will be showing them on Thursday.

Things are going to be crazy busy around here and clear communication is going to be critical for the puppy selection process.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Enjoy a photo of our bright eyed “Barley”, Accelerated Puppy from the Paisley litter. He has a home and will go there in about 3 more weeks.

Dear Waiting List Members

I just sent this email to everyone on the waiting list. I’m posting here so nobody will miss this important information.

We have new puppies! Lots of them. And we have eager people joining the waiting list each day who are ready for puppies now.

I want to reach out to all of you already on the list and ask that you be sure and subscribe to the website www.silverpawcavachons.com. By subscribing (and I know many of you have already done this), you will receive information about the current puppies and updates on the litters and availability of puppies directly into your inbox. Please be sure you have subscribed with an email that you check regularly.

With our first litter going on 6 weeks old, and all the other litters following closely with birth dates, the puppy selection and matching process is going to get intense, feel chaotic, and i need it to run smoothly. To achieve an efficient process for matching puppies, I will be communicating through the website via blog posts and not individually emailing each person until we are in the final stages of matching a puppy.

What this means practically is that I will call out to the waiting list via the blog when a litter is 5 weeks old. I’ll want you to email me with a yes to indicate if there is a pup you could be interested in or a no if you want to pass on a litter. If I don’t receive an email within 48 hours of my blog post, I’ll consider your answer to be a no.

This does not mean you are specifically choosing a puppy right then. Instead, it allows me to narrow the list down to just those families that are ready and see a pup from that particular litter that they could want.

I don’t have time to talk in detail about puppy personality until it is a puppy that you are actually in a position to be able to choose. With me working full time, this process cannot take days because we will run out of time, puppies will become older than 8 weeks old, and people will not have the proper time to line up the travel details.

I also want to let everyone know that I have lots of help this year with the daily socialization and basic care (food, water, poop) of the puppies and dogs, so my teaching job is not taking away from how we are raising the puppies.

Some of you have been on my waiting list for a long time and we have not touched base in months. This is my effort to reach out and connect again so I know how we can move forward.

Thank you for your time and please let me know that you received this email.

How to Choose a Puppy

We are very busy here at Silver Paw Cavachons with new puppies and the fun is just getting started.  This week we will begin puppy selection with the Kenzie litter, but before that happens, I want to talk a bit about how to choose a puppy.

Over the years, I’ve learned that there are 100’s of reasons why a family chooses, or doesn’t choose a puppy.  Some of them are based on myths or false information, while others are based on personal experience.  For some people, they need to see and touch a puppy before they are able to fall in love, and for others, it might be love at first sight, the minute we post the first picture of the litter.  Still, for others, waiting till a puppy is older to see the “personality” is what is needed before they can choose their puppy.

As we begin to post videos of the litters, here are some questions to ask yourself when you’re deciding which puppy will become part of your forever family.

  1. Does this litter fit into your family timeline?

Most puppies will leave and go to their new homes when they are 8 weeks old.  Once you know the birthdate of a litter, you can count forward 8 weeks and that is when the puppy needs to go home.  Look at your family calendar and determine whether or not your family will be ready to receive a puppy at this time. This is the very first thing you need to determine when you are choosing a puppy.  If you have a vacation planned, or you don’t want to potty train a puppy in the middle of your Alaska winter, then you’ll need to pass on this litter.  If the timing works for a litter, then there might be a puppy for you and you’ll need to ask yourself question #2.

2.  Are you particular about the gender of your puppy?

Puppies are gender specific.  You either get a boy or you get a girl.  If you are specific about which gender you want, this will definitely eliminate some of the choices.  If a litter does not have the gender you are wanting, then you’ll need to pass and wait for a new litter.  If you are not particular about gender and/or the litter does have the gender you are wanting, then you’ll want to ask yourself questions #3.

3.  Does this litter have the color you are wanting?

Cavachons come in many colors.  In our experience, the puppies are either a solid color (golden, solid sable, black, black/tan, red), or they are parti colored (black/white, sable/white, blenheim, tri color, red/white).  Combine all these choices with two genders, and there are a LOT of choices to consider when choosing a puppy.  If you are very specific about the color (and gender) that you want, and this litter does not have that color, then you’ll need to pass and wait for another litter.  If you are not particular about the color, or this litter has a puppy that is the right color AND the right gender, then we’ll move on to question #4.

4.  What is the personality of this particular puppy?

For many people, personality is the most important consideration when they are choosing a puppy.  But true personality is very hard to determine at the young age of 5-8 weeks old.  When we are asked about the personality of a puppy, we do our best to communicate what we see in our daily interactions with the puppies, but the personality is not fully developed when the puppy is 5-8 weeks old.  It would be much easier to give a concrete answer to the personality question if the puppies were 12 weeks old, but unfortunately we don’t have the luxury of waiting that long.

Over the years we have had many people tell us what they are looking for in the personality of their future puppy.  We have done our best to match puppies with families based on this information and we have been told that the puppy was perfect, and exactly what they wanted.  We are very grateful for our excellent track record in this area.

Thankfully, the Cavachon has a generally fun loving, easy going temperament, which makes our job of puppy matching a bit easier.  The range of personality differences in a litter is a very mild.  There is always a “quiet” puppy, and the “rambunctious” puppy, but the bell curve is generally quite flat because all of the puppies are super sweet and they just want to be with you, living your life by your side each day.

The process of working through the waiting list is tedious.  If you can ask yourself each of these questions and know what your answers are when I contact you, it will speed up the puppy selection process for all involved.  When I post a litter that is open to puppy selection, if you can drop me a quick note via email that simply lets me know if you’d like to pass, or if you’d like to be considered for this litter, that would be extremely helpful.  If you see a specific puppy that you’re interested in, you can let me know that as well.  If I don’t hear from you within 48 hours of a litter being posted for puppy selection, I will assume that you are a “pass” on the litter and I will be moving on down the waiting list.

I hope this has been helpful as you each begin to look at the available puppies.  As always, let me know if you have any questions.  If you are new to Silver Paw Cavachons, we do have a waiting list for our puppies, so this information is directed toward those that are already on our list.  If you would like more information about our waiting list and the available puppies, please send an email to silverpawcavachons@gmail.com.

Keep an eye out for the Kenzie litter.  They are 5 weeks old this week and just the most darling little things.  They are playing, and growling at each other, and being rambunctious, and just generally being completely adorable.  There are 4 puppies in the litter, 3 girls and 1 boy.

Until then, puppy kisses to all, and I’ll see you in the next blog post!

Roxy Girl Found a Home and Updates

Hello to everyone!

It has been so long since I’ve posted but that should change now that I’ve finally got some backend things figured out with my blog. After hours on the phone with WordPress, going round and round in circles trying to resolve an issue that was making it very inconvenient for me to manage both this dog blog and my personal blog at Grace Without Tears, I finally found my hero customer service rep (the 4th one I had spoken with since August 4) who was able to resolve the problem and fix the issue. I literally had tears in my eyes because my inability to post regularly was weighing heavy on my heart because communication is the backbone of this business. My goal is to get back to posting here on the blog regularly with updates, photos, and videos of everything happening here at Silver Paw Cavachons!

We had a very busy summer and are now having a fairly quiet fall. But we do have one puppy ready to go home as well as a young litter that will be ready to go home in January, and a new pregnant mom in the nursery.

Several of you have emailed me about the last golden girl and I’m happy to tell everyone that she did find her forever home.

We are now looking to place this golden male puppy from the Pearlie litter that was born in July.

He has almost had a couple different homes but alas, he is still here waiting for just the right family. We are currently crate training him and he is hanging out with us in the house whenever someone is home. He is small and just over 5 lbs at almost 5 months old. He should be from 8-12 lbs as an adult.

He is ready to go anytime and we’d love to put him on a plane Friday if there is someone ready for a new puppy.

I also want to let everyone know about the newest litter that will be ready in January. There are 2 pups, both sable & white, one boy and one girl. I’ll post pictures of them in the next couple of days.

Coming in early spring/late winter should be a litter from Justyne and Rocky. I just brought her into the nursery and expect that she’ll have puppies sometime this month.

Please let me know if you have any interest in any of the puppies I’ve talked about. Right now I’d like to hear from those on the waiting list.

My next post will be pictures of the newest litter and an updated photo of the waiting list.
