Grandparent’s Weekend

I haven’t been blogging personal things lately. It has been all I could do to stay on top of new puppy photos and announcements, so the personal stuff gets put on the back burner.

But we had a nice family gathering a couple weekends ago and all the grandparents flew to Spokane to attend Grandparent’s Weekend at UCA, the Academy that Darien attends.

The weekend was filled with music from the choir, choraliers, band, and the orchestra. The gymnastic team also performed. I’m excited that all of my kids will be attending next school year, and we will be living just a few miles from the school!

It was nice for everyone to be together and to get a mini vacation away from the chores of life.

Darien always looks sharp in his tux. He now towers over both grandmas, affectionately known as “Mema” and “Mom”.

Garden Fever

It’s that time of year when growing a garden seems wonderful and romantic and appealing. Visions of beautiful canned goods, plants heavy with produce, and good food, friends and family and laughter, float through my mind.

Where are my seeds?

Do I have enough starter trays?

Hurry, it’s time to plant seeds!!!

But I haven’t planted anything…not yet.

This year I won’t be pulled in so easily to all the romantic visions of a perfect, weed free garden, because I know my summer is going to be very busy packing, sorting, and getting ready to move.

Yep, we’re moving, closer to the school, but that is another post, for another day.

I do still want to have some kind of garden. We will have raspberries and strawberries even if we didn’t want them. They grow like weeds around here. I plan to pick and freeze as many as I can.

We will probably plant some potatoes and I always get sucked into planting tomatoes even though they don’t do all that great around here. I always dream of having jars and jars full of canned tomatoes, but our tomato patch has not blessed us just yet.

In thinking about gardening, there is the ever present reality that there will be weeds in the garden, and so I am constantly thinking about what could be done to prevent them from growing in the first place.

A few weeks ago I found myself in the magazine section of the grocery store. I snapped these photos of photos from the magazine I was paging through.

I love the hay in the pathways. I’m nervous about this idea for my own garden though because it would take a LOT of hay, and I think the weeds would grow through it anyway. I might try it between the raspberry rows though.

I love garden boxes with defined sides, and pathways, and edges. But again my garden is too big to have boxes everywhere.

And I love these stacking blocks. I love them in a circle around trees, I love them as retaining walls, I love them as planter boxes. I never thought of using them to create a space for planting vegetables, but I love the way it looks.

I don’t know what kind of garden I will have this summer, but I have caught garden fever, and my mind is churning, and thinking, and plotting, and planning!!

New URL (web address) for this Website/Blog

Friends, first I want you all to know that I appreciate the fact that you have subscribed to this blog and enjoy the updates! It warms my heart to see, each time I post, the number of people that are receiving my post in their email.

I want to let you all know about some upcoming changes.

First, and most importantly, we have a new address for the blog. If we are not already on your favorites list (then you need to add us), when you type in the blog address, you will need to type in:

http://www.silverpawcavachons.com

This is the new address for this blog/website.

We will also be changing the title of the website to Silver Paw Cavachons. Our first love and passion is the Cavachon Puppy, but we do still love all of our other breeds, and will continue to have litters of other breeds until we retire our mamas. We are going to focus primarily on the Cavachon puppies in the coming years and so thought it was fitting to go ahead and change our name.

We also have a new email address to go along with this change. If you use the Contact Us page, the link is already there, but we’ll go ahead and list it here as well. Our new email address is:

silverpawcavachons@gmail.com

One last thing, we hope to have a true home page on the blog soon, making it feel a little more like an actual website, but we will keep the blog under a new heading called “Silver Paw Tails” where you will find all the fun daily pictures, videos, and candid shots of all of our puppies.

This will all happen in baby steps, so no worries! But we wanted you to know now about the new web address and new email address.

I hope you’ve enjoyed the new Available Puppies litter pages. We’ve enjoyed the challenge of photographing the puppies to showcase them on those pages.

Have a Tail Waggin’ Day!! Kristy

Fields of Gold

The landscape is golden right now! We have had the most glorious fall days this past week, but winter is beginning to take hold with icy fingers!

20111104-172328.jpg

This quaint cabin is just up the road from our home. The owner allows us to use this field for our horses which is especially nice in the summertime when it’s full of tall, green grass!

20111104-172336.jpg

The fall colors are spectacular right now, and the air is crisp, clean, and cold!

20111104-172351.jpg

The skies are a brilliant blue with scattered puffy white clouds, and the sunshine still feels warm on the skin!

20111104-172407.jpg

But winter is edging it’s way into our corner of life. We had our first snow last Thursday, and the pass still shows the evidence!

20111104-172415.jpg

We were dusted lightly with about an inch of snow, but it has all melted now.

20111104-172422.jpg

But there is still snow on the pass. It’s always coldest up there, and the snow always stays there longest. I really don’t want snow till AFTER Thanksgiving. Once Thanksgiving is past, bring it ON!!

Winter is Coming

We’re getting a heavy frost each night now.

We have a fire in each wood stove now.

We dress in layers now.

Winter is coming and things are happening around here so we will be prepared.

20111029-091111.jpg

The Woodman has been busy getting wood.  I think this is his favorite time of the year.  He’s made friends with a neighbor that owns thousands of acres, and has permission to get any downed logs.  I think he even got permission to cut a few trees down here and there as well.  I don’t think anything would have made him much happier.

20111029-091120.jpg

This is the view out my living room windows.  These are fairly massive piles of logs.  There is still a lot of work to do before this wood can be burned in the wood stoves!

20111029-091130.jpg

The horses are waiting for their breakfast.  They make just the perfect couple, Shinanigan and Slick.  They are exactly the same color, but Shinanigan is prettier and flashier, and that’s the way it should be.

20111029-091138.jpg

This is the view of the log pile just outside the back door.  The second pile is directly behind this one, and the third log pile is still on the trailer.

20111029-091146.jpg

This is the view just outside my front door.  Wood is a very important resource right now, and for the next 6-7 months.

20111029-091155.jpg

This is the little roof over the wood outside the front door.  It’s covered with frost this morning, as is the garden.  The fall colors are beautiful right now as well!  We took out the square foot garden boxes that were in the garden.  If somebody wants 8 beautiful 4 x 4 boxes, just let me know!

20111029-091204.jpg

We are officially putting the garden to “sleep” this year.  The Woodman has been hauling horse manure up from the pasture and spreading it all over the garden.  I guess he has big plans for next spring.  I have some big plans too.

20111029-091224.jpg

The sunflowers are drying over the garden fence.  I’m not sure they were mature enough, but perhaps there will be something for the birds to enjoy!

20111029-091236.jpg

The fall colors are peeking out all over the place.  I love this time of year!

20111029-091244.jpg

My feet were frozen when I got back into the house this morning.  It’s pretty easy to tell which footprint I left on the front porch!
